Ando launches AI-agent messaging platform with $20m backing

Ando has emerged from stealth with a team messaging application designed for human employees and AI agents, alongside $20 million in pre-seed and seed funding. The round includes Accel, Index Ventures and Emergence, and the company positions its product as a replacement for Slack or other internal messaging platforms used by teams adopting agents.

The application provides agents with their own identities and inboxes. It supports channels, direct messages, group conversations and live calls that can be transcribed and made available to an agent. Founder Sara Du said agents can browse channels, select those they want to join and enter conversations without being explicitly tagged.

Messaging built around agent participation

Du began examining the issue while helping companies build MCP servers in 2025. Customers wanted to use AI agents within Slack, but moving messages, supplying the relevant context and managing token budgets created technical obstacles. She concluded that the larger limitation lay in communication software designed before agents were expected to participate directly in workplace coordination.

Her description of the problem is the “meat proxy”: a human relays an agent’s output to colleagues rather than allowing the agent to participate in the conversation where a decision is being coordinated. In Ando’s model, an agent can ask a colleague a question, build on another agent’s work and bring in a human when judgment is needed.

That design also permits an agent to send a message to a worker when it considers a notification necessary, rather than waiting for approval. Du described a case in which an agent noticed related conversations in separate channels, brought the participants into a group chat, supplied the context and suggested a decision.

An established collaboration market

Ando enters a category where established providers are already adding agent capabilities. Slack has turned its native bot into an AI agent, while Microsoft has integrated Copilot into Teams in connection with its Office 365 suite. Jack Dorsey’s Buzz also brings people and AI agents together in a messaging app, with a focus more closely aimed at developers.

Du acknowledged that early reactions were muted because the service could appear to be a less polished messaging product before users encountered its agent capabilities. She said customer use increased over longer periods. Ando is now working with customers in software, real estate and finance across 15 countries, although many of the teams are small.

The funding is intended for hiring and token consumption. The broader workplace context includes ChatGPT Work reaches 20 million users, which signals that AI tools are being positioned for organisational use; Ando’s differentiator is to make agents active participants in the team conversation rather than a separate destination.

Business implication

Businesses evaluating Ando will need to judge whether agent-led coordination improves the handling of execution, research and routine communication while people retain responsibility for judgment, strategy and deciding what should happen next.
