Brad Lightcap leaves OpenAI after leading operations and special projects

Brad Lightcap, one of OpenAI’s longest-serving executives, is leaving the AI company to “start something new.” Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018, spent four years as chief financial officer, served as chief operating officer from 2022 until earlier this year, and most recently led special projects.

In an internal message shared online on Tuesday, Lightcap described his decision as bittersweet and said he would have more to share soon about his next venture. He also said he remained confident in OpenAI and expected to support its mission from a different vantage point.

A builder of OpenAI’s business functions

Lightcap said he had helped build early versions of many of OpenAI’s operations and business teams. Those functions included finance, legal, people, corporate security, go-to-market and government work, as well as partnerships.

He said one of the most rewarding parts of his time at the company was watching those teams mature under their leaders. Before OpenAI, Lightcap worked with chief executive Sam Altman at venture capital firm Y Combinator.

His move out of the COO role came during a shake-up of executive responsibilities, when he transitioned to special projects. In his farewell note, he said he had spent recent months considering the next horizon and the obstacles that could stand in the way of mission success.

Executive changes as OpenAI prepares for an IPO

Lightcap’s departure arrives while OpenAI prepares for an IPO described as significant across the industry. The company has also seen other senior figures leave: Fidji Simo’s OpenAI leadership departure announced in July that she would step down after leading AGI development, adding to the leadership transition.

Other recent departures include Bill Peebles, who had led the now-defunct Sora video generator, and Kevin Weil, vice president of the company’s Science vertical. Lightcap did not provide details of the project he plans to pursue next.
