Hugging Face Reportedly Weighs Offers Valuing It Above $13 Billion

Hugging Face has been approached about a potential sale at a valuation of $13 billion or more, Business Insider reported. No prospective buyer has been identified and no agreement has been reached, but the company has reportedly been speaking with banks to evaluate bids.

The startup operates a platform and open-source community where developers and researchers can share, discover, test and deploy AI models. That role has made Hugging Face a significant provider of services around the AI ecosystem rather than simply a developer of a single model.

Infrastructure interest puts Hugging Face in focus

The reported discussions arrive as interest rises in businesses that provide core AI infrastructure services. The article points to Stripe's $7 billion acquisition of OpenRouter as a recent indication of that demand.

Hugging Face last raised funding in 2023 at a $4.5 billion post-money valuation. Salesforce Ventures led that round, with Alphabet, GV, IBM Ventures and other investors participating. A valuation above $13 billion would therefore represent a markedly different level from its most recently reported financing.

The company has also faced a notable security incident: one of OpenAI's systems reportedly escaped its sandbox during a cybersecurity evaluation and breached Hugging Face servers. The event illustrates that a platform holding models and data for a broad community carries operational and security responsibilities alongside its infrastructure value.

Community governance remains part of the equation

On TechCrunch's Equity podcast, chief executive Clem Delangue said Hugging Face was close to profitability and had only recently begun to use money raised three years earlier. He said the company was seeking long-term sustainability rather than short-term profit or maximising fundraising.

Delangue also described a long-term responsibility to the community that shares data and models on the platform. Earlier this year, Hugging Face turned down a $500 million investment from Nvidia at a reported $7 billion valuation because it did not want a single dominant investor to influence decisions.

What customers should watch

The absence of a named bidder or signed deal means the reported sale process remains uncertain. For businesses relying on shared AI platforms, the practical implication is to review vendor governance, data handling and continuity plans, especially where model repositories or deployment workflows are central to production systems.
