Instagram will limit reach for undisclosed AI-generated profiles

Instagram has announced that it will limit the reach of accounts featuring AI-generated people when creators do not disclose that fact. The platform is also renaming its existing “AI creator” label to “AI-generated profile”, a term intended to make the nature of the profile clearer to users.
The label is designed for profiles whose featured person was generated or substantially created with artificial intelligence. Instagram said creators that apply the label will not be penalised simply because the account centres on an AI-generated person. The reach restriction is aimed instead at profiles that fail to make the disclosure.
A label for synthetic profile subjects
Instagram draws a boundary between a synthetic person at the centre of an account and routine creative use of AI tools. The AI-generated profile label is not required when someone uses AI to edit photographs, refine captions, produce graphics or make other creative adjustments.
The company said the change responds to feedback from people who encountered profiles that seemed to belong to real humans and only later discovered that the person shown was entirely AI-generated. Its stated objective is to tell users when the person featured on a profile is synthetic or substantially AI-created.
Context for creators and brands
The policy arrives as AI influencers become more visible across social platforms. A Wired investigation into the gay dating app Goose identified more than two dozen accounts appearing to feature AI-generated male influencers; some reportedly contacted potential users through direct messages to encourage sign-ups.
Health and wellness content has also raised concerns. The New York Times reported finding hundreds of AI-generated doctors, healers and wellness personalities on social media promoting supplements or making health claims. In that setting, a clearly understood profile-level disclosure can help users distinguish a synthetic persona from a real person.
The update follows criticism of an Instagram AI tool that let users generate images with other people’s likenesses. Questions raised by Instagram photo use in AI image generation about using Instagram photos in image generation illustrate why clear AI-related product notices matter when platforms change creative tools. Meta later removed the feature after users objected to public Instagram content being used without an explicit opt-in.
What the policy means in practice
Separately, Meta recently reached an $18 billion settlement with US states over allegations related to Facebook and Instagram’s effects on children and teenagers. The agreement includes a default two-hour daily usage limit for teens across the services, a Night Mode block, muted notifications during school hours and other restrictions.
For organisations operating Instagram accounts, the immediate implication is to assess the profile’s central subject rather than every individual AI-assisted asset. If that person is generated or substantially created with AI, applying Instagram’s AI-generated profile label is the practical way to preserve reach while giving audiences the disclosure the platform now expects.
