Malachyte secures $10M for real-time e-commerce recommendations

Malachyte, founded by former Spotify employees Sidd Motwani, Ian Anderson and Shivaditya Sinha, has raised $10 million in seed funding for an e-commerce platform built around real-time shopper intent. The round was co-led by Bessemer Venture Partners and Gradient, with participation from Harpoon Ventures.

The company is adapting ideas from Spotify’s Vector AI, a behavioural intelligence system that predicts a person’s intent and likely next actions rather than relying only on historical activity. Spotify’s system powers about 90% of recommendations across its 800 million users.

From recommendation infrastructure to online retail

Malachyte argues that many online stores still personalise primarily through purchase history, demographic segments or logged-in profiles. As a result, a first-time visitor can receive a generic storefront, while a returning customer may be shown products based chiefly on past purchases instead of their current task.

Its platform uses what the company calls “two-headed Vector AI”. One part is intended to model a shopper’s general taste, while the other estimates what the shopper wants during the current visit. The system starts using context available when a page loads and refines its assessment as the visitor interacts with the store.

Motwani gave the example of a visitor searching for “heavy-duty boot” and then selecting steel-toed boots. That sequence could raise work pants and gloves in the page ranking while lowering dress shoes, without an account or a prior purchase history. Hovers, scrolls, search refinements and add-to-cart events are also treated as signals.

Deployment options for merchants

Malachyte has developed and tested the technology since 2024 and worked with more than 20 enterprise customers in travel, grocery and retail before concentrating on e-commerce. The platform first went live with Fun.com in fall 2025.

Since June 2026, Shopify merchants have been able to access Malachyte through a native integration. Larger retailers can connect to the platform through its API. The company said the new capital will support distribution and additional product and commercial hires.

Context is also part of the company’s model: a mobile visitor arriving from an email link late at night may be evaluated differently from the same visitor browsing on a laptop in the morning. Malachyte’s wider ambition is to align merchandising and marketing around a shared view of behaviour, a direction relevant to Bending Spoons builds a digital empire as technology businesses continue to combine AI with operational scale.

Business implication

For retailers, the practical question is whether their commerce stack can turn in-session behaviour into product discovery and merchandising decisions while a shopper is still active. Malachyte’s funding and deployment model place that capability within reach through Shopify or an API integration.
