Microsoft 365 outage improves while authentication recovery is monitored

Microsoft reports improving Microsoft 365 availability

Microsoft said its mitigation work is progressing on the second day of an outage affecting Outlook email and other Microsoft 365 services. The incident caused mail delays and failures, authentication problems and degraded search for some Outlook users, while the company has not yet declared the services fully restored.

In its latest status update, Microsoft said telemetry indications remained positive and service availability was improving within the remaining affected infrastructure. It has moved into an extended monitoring period intended to confirm a full resolution.

A core authentication configuration caused wider disruption

Microsoft attributed the incident to a misconfiguration in a core authentication configuration used across multiple Microsoft 365 services. Its investigation found that the configuration problem was preventing authentication components from deploying as expected to part of the infrastructure.

Although Outlook received the most attention, Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 Business and Enterprise status information listed effects on SharePoint, Copilot, Teams, Purview, Defender XDR, the Microsoft 365 Admin Center and Universal Print. The scope illustrates how a shared authentication layer can affect services beyond the initially visible email disruption.

Microsoft first reviewed recent changes that could have contributed to the problem, then tested and implemented mitigations. As those measures rolled out, the company said Outlook users should experience gradual recovery in mail flow.

Mail flow and search showed separate recovery stages

By 10 p.m. ET on Monday, Microsoft said mail flow was improving, but Outlook search functionality remained degraded. Shortly after 3 a.m. ET on Tuesday, it reported improvements in search as well, while continuing to monitor the affected infrastructure.

The incident follows Microsoft tests fix after hours-long Outlook outage and shows that Outlook recovery communications can continue after an initial technical fix is being tested. Microsoft’s current update is more limited than a restoration notice: it says mitigation actions are progressing and availability is improving.

Business implication

Organizations using Microsoft 365 should treat service recovery and full resolution as distinct operational states, monitor Microsoft’s status communications, and keep tested alternative communication processes available while authentication-dependent services remain under extended monitoring.
