OpenAI Reportedly Discusses $30B Pre-IPO Round at $1.4T

OpenAI is reportedly pursuing a new pre-IPO financing round

OpenAI is in talks with investors to raise at least $30 billion in a pre-IPO funding round at a valuation of roughly $1.4 trillion, Bloomberg reported. If completed, the financing would give the ChatGPT maker a substantial new pool of private capital ahead of an anticipated public-market debut next year.

The reported transaction would follow OpenAI’s $122 billion fundraise in March, which valued the company at $852 billion. That round had been presented as the company’s final private raise before an initial public offering that, until recently, was expected to take place in 2026.

OpenAI did not respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment on the reported discussions. The proposed financing has been described as a bridge round to an IPO, meaning its terms and timing remain contingent on a deal being reached.

Revenue momentum and product focus shape investor interest

Investor interest is being driven by OpenAI’s position in generative AI and by reported commercial momentum. Bloomberg said the company’s run-rate revenue climbed 70% from July to reach $40 billion in August, following a strategic refocus on key areas including coding.

The report also noted that Anthropic briefly outpaced OpenAI at the start of the year. The subsequent focus on selected product areas provides context for the revenue figure, while the scale of the proposed round underscores how much capital investors may be willing to commit before a public listing.

OpenAI’s leadership and corporate changes remain part of the backdrop, with OpenAI executive departures during reorganisation detailing executive departures during its reorganisation and IPO preparations. The reported new round would arrive as the company continues to define the path between private financing and eventual public-market access.

IPO timing has moved beyond 2026

CEO Sam Altman has ruled out a public debut in 2026, saying that AI safety must take priority. Speaking to Fortune in response to warnings from safety researchers about existential risks from AI, Altman said he regarded a 10% chance of “killing everybody by the end of the decade” as unacceptable.

That stance changes the immediate role of additional private funding. Rather than simply completing a final step before a near-term flotation, a bridge round could support OpenAI while its IPO timetable is extended and its safety priorities remain central.

For businesses tracking major AI suppliers, the practical implication is to treat reported valuations and IPO dates as moving planning assumptions: OpenAI’s funding capacity may expand significantly, but its public-market timetable is now tied to its stated safety priorities as well as commercial growth.
