OpenAI Reportedly Acquires Glass Imaging in Deal Above $300 Million
OpenAI reportedly adds smartphone camera expertise
OpenAI has acquired smartphone camera maker Glass Imaging in a transaction valued at more than $300 million, The Wall Street Journal reported. Glass Imaging was founded in 2019, is based in Los Altos, California, and had previously raised about $30 million from investors.
The acquisition would bring a specialised computational-imaging team into the ChatGPT maker. OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment, so the companies had not publicly confirmed the terms or outlined integration plans at the time of the report.
Neural networks designed around camera hardware
Glass Imaging focuses on overcoming the physical size constraints of smartphone cameras with AI. Its approach is not presented as a tool for editing photographs after they are taken. Instead, the company uses neural networks to learn the characteristics of individual camera systems, including the different cameras used across smartphone models, with the aim of producing better images at the moment the shutter is pressed.
The company was founded by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, both former Apple engineers. They previously led the team that developed Apple’s Portrait Mode, a background that connects their work in mobile imaging with Glass Imaging’s camera-specific AI technology.
Hardware ambitions provide the wider context
The reported deal comes as OpenAI is rumoured to be developing its own hardware, including smartphones, earbuds and AI companion devices. The competitive backdrop also includes OpenAI and Apple commercial secrecy tensions and its focus on commercial-secrecy tensions during the race for AI devices, while OpenAI seeks to assemble technology and design capabilities for possible new products.
In 2025, OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman and Apple designer Jony Ive said they had been working together on a device startup named io. OpenAI subsequently bought Ive’s company for $6.5 billion, placing the reported Glass Imaging transaction alongside a larger set of hardware-related moves.
