Profound secures $180M Series D at $1.8B valuation

Profound, a startup developing marketing software for visibility in AI search results, has raised a $180 million Series D at a $1.8 billion valuation. The round arrives less than seven months after the company raised a $96 million Series C.
Sequoia and Kleiner Perkins led the Series D. Existing investors Lightspeed Venture Partners, Khosla Ventures and South Park Commons also participated. Profound says its revenue increased threefold during the past six months and that it now serves more than 1,000 enterprise customers.
Marketing for AI-mediated discovery
Founded two years ago, Profound began as an analytics platform and has expanded into research and marketing-strategy tools. Its product is designed to help companies understand how AI contributes to consumers discovering their brands, then use that insight to shape marketing activity.
The company operates in the generative engine optimization and answer engine optimization market, often shortened to GEO and AEO. Startups in this category are seeking ways to help products surface in the AI systems that customers are increasingly using for search.
Profound names Comcast, The Estée Lauder Companies and Walmart among its enterprise customers. The customer count and reported revenue growth provide the operating backdrop to a financing that values the company at $1.8 billion only two years after its launch.
Investor focus on AI software businesses
The investment follows a broader interest in companies building commercial applications around AI. A related example is AI coding unicorn serving business applications, which reached unicorn status while targeting business-application development through AI coding, illustrating how investors are backing software companies focused on distinct enterprise workflows.
For marketing teams, the relevant question is not simply whether AI search is growing, but whether it changes the route by which customers encounter a brand. Measurement practices built around established search channels may not reveal that route in the same way.
Practical implication for businesses
Businesses can use this development as a reason to identify the AI systems that feature in their customers’ research journeys, define what brand-discovery signals they need to observe, and determine whether their current marketing analytics can support those decisions.
