Re:Build Raises $2.1 Billion for US Hard-Tech Manufacturing

Re:Build raises $2.1 billion to expand manufacturing capacity

Massachusetts-based manufacturing accelerator Re:Build has raised $2.1 billion to expand its ability to manufacture hard-tech products and create new industrial startups. General Catalyst and JPMorganChase’s Strategic Investment Group led the investment, while Re:Build did not disclose the other investors.

The company said the capital will support a broader manufacturing platform intended to ensure innovative products can be made in the United States for generations. Re:Build was founded in 2020 and positions itself as an American counterpart to Shenzhen, combining product development, engineering and production capabilities with startup incubation.

A manufacturing platform for industrial partners and new ventures

Re:Build says its network of companies employs more than 2,100 people in the US and contains more than 2.4 million square feet of manufacturing capacity. It also says it has launched hundreds of products and production systems during its six years of operation.

The business operates through partnerships with industrial companies and through the creation of startups in critical, underserved markets. In its partnership model, Re:Build designs, engineers and manufactures products at scale across sectors that include aerospace and defence.

Co-founder Jeff Wilke said Re:Build was established in response to what he described as the economic and national-security risks of US deindustrialisation. He said the new funding would allow the company to move faster and build a manufacturing business and platform for American industrial leadership.

Slate Auto illustrates the startup incubation model

One of Re:Build’s most prominent ventures is Slate Auto. Wilke and co-founder Miles Arnone developed the idea in 2022, then spun the company out in 2023 to help it attract capital. The venture has since raised at least $1.4 billion, including investment from Bezos’ family office, as it works on an ultra-low-cost, bare-bones pickup truck designed for customer customisation.

The commercial path for the venture is reflected in Slate Auto affordable EV pricing and pre-orders as the company prepared to publish pricing and open pre-orders for its affordable electric vehicle. Re:Build’s links to Amazon also extend beyond Wilke, a former Amazon commercial CEO: chief digital and product officer Wei Gao was a longtime Amazon vice president and technical adviser to Bezos.

General Catalyst chief executive Hemant Taneja said rebuilding US industrial capacity is an economic and national-security imperative, and argued that competition with China requires platform companies able to operate at genuine scale. For businesses building physical products, the funding underlines that access to engineering, production capacity and industrial partnerships can be central to turning a hardware concept into a scalable company.
