Stripe confirms acquisition of AI gateway OpenRouter

Stripe confirms acquisition of AI gateway OpenRouter

Stripe has confirmed it is acquiring OpenRouter, the AI gateway that routes developer prompts across different models. The companies did not disclose a purchase price, but the New York Times reported that Stripe paid $7.5 billion, a sharp increase from OpenRouter’s $1.3 billion valuation in May.

The reported transaction would allocate $1.5 billion to OpenRouter’s founders and $6 billion to investors. Stripe reportedly competed with other interested parties, including Databricks, for the fast-growing company.

A developer gateway joins a payments platform

OpenRouter is best known for helping developers manage access to and usage of multiple AI models. In a letter to investors, Stripe founders Patrick and John Collison said the company is exceptionally useful for developers, while Stripe itself is one of the world’s largest developer platforms.

Stripe framed the transaction in the context of the economic activity surrounding AI. It says 88% of the Forbes AI 50 use its products, including OpenAI and Anthropic, as do 100% of Brex’s fastest-growing startups. The founders used “the singularity” in their letter, but the wording was a tongue-in-cheek reference rather than a literal explanation of the acquisition.

The deal also follows reports that Stripe had agreed to buy the company for more than $7 billion: Stripe’s reported OpenRouter acquisition deal described the scale of the proposed transaction as OpenRouter’s valuation rose rapidly.

AI expense management becomes a strategic layer

OpenRouter said in its own blog post that its product, mission and current commitments remain unchanged. It also indicated that it expects to continue operating independently after the transaction closes in the coming weeks.

For Stripe, the purchase extends beyond its traditional focus on collecting and managing incoming payments. PitchBook research analyst Franco Granda described it as an attempt to place Stripe in the middle of capital flows in the AI era, including expenses associated with model usage and tokens.

Other companies are moving into adjacent areas. Databricks has developed an AI gateway, while Rippling and Ramp have introduced products aimed at employee AI spending and return on investment. Owning OpenRouter gives Stripe visibility into how developers use AI and may provide influence across model suppliers, hyperscalers and neoclouds.

What businesses should take from the deal

For businesses adopting several AI models, the acquisition underlines that routing, usage data and token costs are becoming material operational concerns. Teams should treat model access and AI expenditure controls as part of their technology governance, alongside the applications and payment systems they already manage.
