Alabama settlement requires TikTok to add youth-use safeguards

Alabama settlement requires TikTok to add youth-use safeguards

TikTok has agreed to pay Alabama at least $100 million to resolve allegations that the short-form video platform misled users about safety and was designed to addict children. The settlement was reached before the case was scheduled to go to trial on Monday.

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall’s office said TikTok could ultimately pay the state as much as $300 million, subject to certain conditions. Alongside the financial terms, TikTok agreed to introduce a two-hour daily time limit for underage users and additional parental controls.

Product restrictions form part of the agreement

The settlement also calls for restrictions on overnight usage and cosmetic filters. These commitments place specific product controls alongside the monetary payment, making youth protections a central part of the resolution.

Marshall said parents in Alabama could “rest easier” because protections would be put in place to shield children from the dangers of social-media addiction. TikTok said the agreement builds on its commitment and core objective of continually improving safety tools for teens.

Child-safety scrutiny continues

The Alabama case arrives after TikTok reached a separate $400 million settlement with the US Department of Justice in August over allegations that it violated child privacy laws. That federal action is reflected in TikTok child data privacy settlement as another major financial resolution involving children’s data protections.

The two settlements concern different allegations, but together they show that TikTok’s teen and child protections are receiving attention from both state and federal authorities. The Alabama agreement also attaches operational requirements to that scrutiny, including limits that affect how younger users access the app.

What the settlement means for businesses

For organisations that market, build services or manage communities around youth-facing platforms, the practical implication is to monitor product-rule changes as closely as legal developments. Time limits, parental controls, overnight restrictions and filter rules can affect audience access, campaign planning and safety processes.
