Meta opens WhatsApp Business setup to AI coding agents
Meta has introduced WhatsApp Business Tools MCP, a Model Context Protocol server that enables AI coding agents to set up and manage WhatsApp Business messaging through conversational instructions. The server can connect agents including Claude, Cursor, Codex and ChatGPT to the WhatsApp Business Platform.
The announcement arrived alongside Meta’s news about new AI-focused subscription plans. It changes a setup process that previously required developers to move among the Developer Console, Meta Business Manager, API reference material and a code editor.
Instead, a developer can describe the required configuration to a chosen AI agent. The agent can then perform much of the operational work involved in bringing a business onto WhatsApp Business messaging.
What the new MCP server can do
Meta says the agent can create a company WhatsApp Business account, add and verify a phone number, register the account for Cloud API access, and check the business’s Terms of Service. It can also create a messaging template from a description or edit an existing template.
Testing and operational checks are also part of the intended workflow. Businesses can use the agent to test messages and webhooks, while monitoring items that may otherwise fail quietly, including Terms of Service status, payment method and Business Verification.
During configuration, Meta says its Meta Social Technologies MCP can complement the WhatsApp-specific server by helping an agent discover API endpoints, search documentation and troubleshoot errors. Meta already offers MCP servers for activities such as ad management and app-configuration monitoring, and the new server extends that lineup to WhatsApp business onboarding.
Why the change matters for business teams

Model Context Protocol servers are also being offered by companies including PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, Notion, Slack, Salesforce, Atlassian, X, Google and Microsoft, allowing AI agents to interact with their services. Meta’s approach applies that model to the tools required to establish and maintain WhatsApp Business messaging.
For business teams, the practical implication is to decide which setup tasks can be delegated to an AI agent and to validate account status, templates, webhooks and verification requirements before customer messaging is put into operation.
