YouTube expands comments and paid tools for creator communities

YouTube has announced upgrades to comments and creator community tools at its Made on YouTube event, adding GIF replies, voice-based commenting while watching on TV, and paid members-only communities. The company is also introducing new ways for fans to promote creators through Hype, including a virtual currency called Jewels.

The changes broaden the ways viewers can participate around videos while giving creators additional tools to manage and monetise fan activity. YouTube said comments remain a major channel for viewer interaction, but its options have trailed capabilities available on other social platforms.

Comments move beyond the keyboard

Viewers will be able to post GIFs in YouTube comments. They will also be able to comment from a TV while watching, using voice rather than entering short responses with a remote control.

For creators, YouTube is testing personalised comment moderation. The company already provides comment moderation filters, but said creators may need more tailored controls, particularly during live video where conversations can move too quickly to monitor manually. YouTube described the feature as an experiment and did not disclose technical details about its operation.

Memberships and Hype become community products

Channel Memberships will gain paid, members-only communities in which members can publish posts and begin discussions with other fans. A new channel memberships page will present those communities alongside other memberships, helping viewers find options aligned with their interests.

Hype, which lets fans recommend smaller creators’ videos and appear on fan leaderboards, is receiving “Hype with Jewels.” Fans were previously limited to three free hypes per week. They will now be able to buy Jewels to hype videos further, and their handles will be permanently added to the video description. YouTube said more than 75 million unique videos have been hyped over 1 billion times.

The rollout sits alongside creator tools such as A/B testing, live dubbing and AI-assisted editing. It also extends the direction set by YouTube Shorts testing and live AI dubbing through testing tools for Shorts and AI dubbing for live streams, with YouTube continuing to combine production features with audience engagement systems.

Sharing expands into group conversations

YouTube’s direct messaging feature, which supports sharing videos with family and friends, will add group chats in the coming months. Users will also be able to record and share short, unpolished videos inside those conversations.

For businesses using YouTube as a creator or community channel, the practical implication is to treat comments, memberships and moderation as connected operating areas: participation can create value, but it requires a clear member offering and a plan for managing the discussion that follows.
