Airbnb introduces AI search and expands in-app travel services

Airbnb introduces AI search and expands in-app travel services

Airbnb has introduced AI-powered property search in its app as part of its fall product update, while expanding travel-related services including meal delivery, laundry, baby-gear rental, selected ski and boat rentals, and grocery delivery. Guests can activate a toggle and search for properties through text or voice prompts.

The company is also broadening social features intended to help travelers discover destinations, stays, and experiences through people in their network. Users can view a map of their connections’ past or upcoming trips, subject to a setting that lets people opt out of sharing their trips.

Search adapts to traveler prompts

Airbnb’s new interface generates dynamic filters from the preferences expressed in a query. A traveler who enters “baby,” for instance, may be shown additional filters for cribs, playgrounds, or children’s books and toys. The feature is designed for property discovery rather than a chatbot-style interaction.

Brian Chesky, Airbnb’s chief executive, said the company had deliberately taken a cautious approach to AI. He said the challenge is not simply creating AI search, but operating it in e-commerce without damaging conversion rates on a platform where $100 billion moves through the business.

The rollout follows Airbnb’s faster AI releases and search testing on Airbnb’s faster AI feature releases and planned search testing, while the new product update puts the search capability directly behind a user-controlled toggle. Airbnb said it will iterate on the feature quickly over the coming months.

AI summaries and social trip discovery

Beyond query handling, Airbnb plans to use AI to bring forward relevant features of a listing. Travelers will also be able to compare properties saved to a wishlist using AI-powered summaries and reviews, giving them another way to assess alternatives before booking.

The social layer adds context around a connection’s travel activity. After selecting a trip on the map, users can see where that connection stayed and which experiences they chose, such as food tastings or craft workshops. Airbnb is also creating neighborhood pages based on guest reviews and other sources to help people find places to eat and things to do.

What the update means for travel businesses

Airbnb is combining transactional services, AI-led discovery, and social signals inside one app. Businesses building travel search or marketplace products should consider whether their listing data can support specific preference-based filters, whether comparison tools make choices clearer, and whether privacy settings remain understandable when customer activity becomes part of discovery.
