Cal AI used tightly knit influencer communities to build $30M revenue

Cal AI scaled through performance-based creator partnerships

Cal AI, an AI-powered calorie-tracking app founded in 2024 by 19-year-old Zach Yadegari, generated more than $30 million in revenue in two years. MyFitness acquired the company in March for an undisclosed amount. Speaking at TechCrunch Disrupt, Yadegari attributed much of the app’s rapid online growth to a large, paid network of influencers.

The first signal arrived when one influencer post brought roughly 1,000 new users over two days. That result persuaded the team that creator distribution could work at scale, and it began recruiting influencers as quickly as possible to publish about the product.

A repeatable, measurable acquisition model

Yadegari described the approach as linear but exceptionally fast: each post drew a measurable audience, with a portion of viewers converting into users. Rather than treating influencer promotion as a broad brand exercise, Cal AI sought to quantify the relationship between creator reach and user acquisition.

The company also negotiated directly on rates and expected outcomes. Influencers could be offered a specified payment in return for a stated level of use, with continued posting required until that threshold was reached. The model linked spending to a defined distribution target instead of relying only on a single post or an imprecise awareness measure.

Finding suitable partners mattered as much as increasing their number. Yadegari said Cal AI looked for influencers with “very tight communities,” where reach could be counted more clearly. That emphasis gave the company a way to identify creators whose audiences were not merely large but sufficiently concentrated to assess results.

What the case means for product teams

Cal AI’s experience shows how a consumer app can turn an early acquisition signal into an operating process: test a channel, measure the user response, negotiate explicit output expectations and repeat the model with creators whose communities can be evaluated. For businesses considering creator-led distribution, the practical implication is to establish conversion and performance criteria before expanding the partnership budget.

Yadegari has since launched Persona, an AI agent startup that has raised $10 million. He said its planned personal assistant would operate through internet-connected channels including iMessage, apps, email and phone calls, alongside a proposed hardware ecosystem. The Cal AI case nevertheless remains a concrete example of how disciplined measurement can guide paid creator activity as a business scales.
