OpenAI to Test Visual Ads in ChatGPT Image Generation

OpenAI says it will begin testing a new visual advertising format during image generation in ChatGPT later this month in the United States, starting with an initial group of advertisers. The company says ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people each week and describes the service as the world’s largest AI-native consumer platform.
The format is intended to help people explore products and services through imagery showing product inspiration, use cases or the experiences an offering can enable. OpenAI says the ads will be clearly labelled and will remain separate from the image a user is creating.
The company also restated a central operating rule for its advertising products: ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT provides. It positions advertising as a way to broaden access to AI beyond what subscription revenue alone can support, while offering businesses a channel to reach people researching ideas, weighing options and discovering relevant products or services.
Measurement integrations and attribution partners
Alongside the visual-ad test, OpenAI is expanding the measurement tools available for ChatGPT Ads. Integrations with Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp are designed to let advertisers send conversion data from their existing systems into ChatGPT Ads.
OpenAI says it now supports web and app attribution partners for Conversions API, reporting and click attribution, including AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin. Its full-funnel and advanced-measurement partners include Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL.
The company is also exploring geo-based incrementality experiments with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic. OpenAI cited partner-reported results: DV Rockerbox found WeightWatchers’ attributed cost per acquisition was 15.3% below its blended paid-search benchmark; WorkMagic reported a statistically significant lift for Dose, with 67% of incremental purchases from net-new customers; and Triple Whale said 93% of Portland Leather visitors from ChatGPT Ads were new.
Brand suitability without access to conversations
OpenAI says its placement guardrails assess whether a conversation is appropriate for advertising and are intended to prevent ads appearing in emotionally vulnerable, sensitive or otherwise unsuitable contexts. Automated review, human oversight and ongoing monitoring are used to identify policy violations and refine safeguards.
For qualifying advertisers with narrower policy needs, the company has made Negative Phrases available. OpenAI is also developing brand-suitability evaluation pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science. The partners are expected to assess the application of OpenAI’s safety standards in a controlled testing environment without access to private user conversations.
For businesses, the announcement makes ChatGPT Ads a more measurable and visually oriented advertising option, but the limited US image-generation test means teams should validate conversion reporting, suitability controls and incremental outcomes against their own campaign requirements before allocating budget.
