Generalist valuation rises to $3 billion in Series B extension

Robotics startup Generalist has reached a reported valuation of $3 billion after raising nearly $200 million in additional capital led by 8VC. The financing extends the company’s $400 million Series B, led by Radical Ventures and announced in June at a $2 billion valuation, bringing the round’s total to $600 million.
Generalist and 8VC did not respond to requests for comment. The additional capital was reported by two people with knowledge of the funding, while a regulatory filing indicated that the fresh funding totals nearly $200 million.
A foundation model for multiple robots
Founded in 2024, Generalist was created by former Google DeepMind researchers Pete Florence and Andy Zeng, alongside former Boston Dynamics engineer Andrew Barry. Its early backers include 8VC, Radical Ventures, Nvidia, Union Square Ventures, Bezos Expeditions and AI researcher Fei-Fei Li.
The company is developing an AI foundation model intended to work across various robots. Generalist says its newly released Gen 1.5 model enables robots to learn new tasks from video demonstrations lasting as little as three to 12 seconds.
Generalist is working with a small group of customers and using their feedback to adapt the model to particular use cases. That approach places the company in a fast-growing field where investors are seeking software that can reduce the need to explicitly train a robot for every new task.
Competition and limits of general robotics
The market already includes Physical Intelligence, reportedly valued at $11 billion, SoftBank-backed Skild AI at $14 billion, and Genesis AI, which was in talks last month to raise capital at a $3 billion valuation. The industrial backdrop also includes Mind Robotics industrial automation funding as evidence that capital continues to target industrial automation alongside broad robotics models.
Some investors describe the opportunity as a potential robotics “ChatGPT moment,” in which robots could perform general tasks without specific training for each one. However, the comparison has important limits: robots cannot be trained on the entirety of internet data in the way large language models can, and some venture capitalists warn that a truly general robotics model may still be years away.
What businesses should take from the funding
For businesses evaluating robotics, Generalist’s funding is a signal to assess narrowly defined operational tasks, the quality of available demonstrations and the feedback needed to tailor a model. The practical implication is to validate performance in specific workflows before treating a general-purpose robotics model as a substitute for task-by-task deployment planning.
