Grindr Tests Premium EDGE Tier Alongside Healthcare Expansion

Grindr Tests Premium EDGE Tier Alongside Healthcare Expansion

Grindr pursues premium subscriptions and adjacent services

Grindr is testing EDGE, an AI-enabled subscription tier positioned above its existing XTRA and Unlimited plans, while forecasting annual revenue of more than $540 million. The company generated $195 million in revenue in 2022, and CEO George Arison said its growth has principally come from increasing spending by existing customers rather than a dramatic expansion in the user base.

In the second quarter, Grindr reported 1.4 million paying users, equal to 9% of its user base. Pay conversion has risen from under 6% to more than 9% since 2022, while average revenue per user has nearly doubled. Grindr says adjusted EBITDA margins have remained above 40%.

EDGE is still in testing and is expected to launch toward the end of this year or early next year. It will sit above XTRA, priced at $23.99, and Unlimited, priced at $44.99. A Canadian test that translated to roughly $350–375 per month in US dollars was one of several price points used to assess demand elasticity, Arison said, rather than a final announced price.

AI matching and a leaner engineering operation

Arison described EDGE as a package of features derived from AI rather than a subscription that sells AI as a standalone product. With user consent, the service is intended to use behavioural and intent signals to make matches that are more useful than those based on sparse profiles. He said retention for the tested features has been higher than for any Grindr feature to date.

The company also plans to use AI to look beyond a user’s home city when suggesting potential partners. Arison cited an estimated gay population of 50,000 to 60,000 people in San Francisco as an example of the limited local pool available even in a major market. Grindr does not track whether users later enter relationships, he said.

Grindr’s technical organisation comprises about 94 or 95 people across technical roles. Arison said roughly 80% of the company’s code is now AI-written and that engineering productivity increased 2.5 times during the past year. The US workforce numbers 175 employees, alongside a team in Colombia.

Healthcare and travel remain early-stage businesses

The longer-term strategy is a “gayborhood in your pocket” spanning dating, healthcare and travel. Through its Woodwork line, Grindr has begun with cash-pay products including ED medication, GLP-1s and peptides. It also launched an in-app AI bot intended to handle the full transaction rather than send customers to Woodwork.com.

For HIV prevention and treatment, Grindr has committed to provide 10 million people with direct access to information on where to obtain PrEP. The service is already available in the US through its in-app health centre, with international access also part of the commitment. Connecting users with gay doctors through telehealth is a more distant possibility and is not being built today.

Subscriptions account for about 83% of current revenue, compared with around 86% in 2022. Advertising and other non-subscription revenue, including healthcare, remain a small part of the business. For businesses pursuing AI-led expansion, Grindr’s approach underscores the need to distinguish tested premium features and early adjacent services from established revenue lines while validating retention and willingness to pay.
