Instacart introduces Clementine conversational grocery assistant

Instacart has launched Clementine, an AI-powered grocery-shopping assistant that turns conversations, grocery lists and recipes into ready-to-buy carts. The service is now available in the United States and Canada, and is designed to help households choose meals, assemble orders and work within a budget.

Customers can use natural-language requests such as a week of budget-friendly lunches for children, high-protein easy dinners for two, or an order based on their usual purchases. They can also upload a photo of a handwritten list or a screenshot of a digital list for conversion into a cart.

From meal choice to checkout

Clementine can generate personalised recipes or surface recipes from trusted publishers. Its recommendations can be tailored to household preferences and dietary requirements, including gluten-free, vegetarian, nut-free and organic options.

The assistant also presents relevant deals and promotions while offering lower-cost alternatives. This places product selection, dietary filtering and price considerations within the same conversational flow rather than leaving shoppers to search each element separately.

Chris Rogers, Instacart’s CEO, said the company has spent nearly 15 years learning how families shop and eat, and that Clementine applies that knowledge to the recurring question of what to prepare for dinner.

Delivery apps compete for planning activity

Instacart is not alone in applying conversational AI to grocery ordering. Uber Eats and DoorDash have introduced similar assistants that can transform natural-language requests and grocery lists into personalised carts.

The pattern indicates that delivery platforms are seeking a role earlier in the purchase journey. They are competing not only on delivery speed and product range, but also on becoming a household’s starting point for grocery and meal planning instead of sending users to general-purpose AI chatbots such as ChatGPT.

Business implication

For grocery retailers and brands using these platforms, the practical implication is that product information must support conversational discovery: dietary attributes, pricing, promotions and suitable alternatives need to be accurate so an assistant can form relevant carts for shoppers.
