Instinct rolls out dedicated email addresses for its AI assistant

Instinct, the AI assistant valued at $2.5 billion, is rolling out dedicated email addresses for users’ agents. Founder Noah Shinn said the feature is intended to let Instinct create and operate its own accounts without adding activity to a user’s personal inbox.

The addresses are designed for tasks that depend on email, including registering for services, contacting businesses and following up on unresolved requests. Shinn said an agent could use its address to ask a restaurant about a special request, check a business’s availability or sign up for a service needed to complete a task.

An inbox for autonomous task handling

Users can forward information to an Instinct address when the agent needs it to act. In the example described by the company, a customer can send an order confirmation for a product return. Instinct can then contact support, share the order details, ask whether a return or replacement is preferred, and come back with a return label to print.

The agent can also be included in group email threads to follow information as it is exchanged. A user may send it a lengthy thread and ask which decisions remain open, which actions are due and when, or other questions about the correspondence. Instinct says the agent will return to the user when input is required, but otherwise acts autonomously.

Growing access to accounts, location and payments

The release is part of a series of updates intended to extend the assistant’s operational scope. Instinct recently partnered with 1Password to help it log in to users’ existing accounts, reducing the need for users to intervene with credentials. The company has also introduced location sharing, allowing the agent to use a user’s current position for nearby business searches, restaurants, routes and itineraries.

Users can ask Instinct about their location history, such as where they parked or which restaurant they visited last month. In August, Instinct partnered with Stripe on payment capabilities that allow the agent to book trips, classes and appointments and make purchases.

Customer relationships remain a consideration

Dedicated agent email accounts can make routine tasks smoother for users who do not want to provide a personal email address or phone number for a one-off interaction. At the same time, businesses may have less visibility into the identity of the person behind an account when an AI agent manages the exchange.

Instinct has reserved some addresses for early users, while other users can claim an address through its mail service. For organisations receiving these messages, the practical implication is to prepare support, account and communication workflows for agent-managed interactions while preserving the information needed to resolve the customer’s request.
