Joby completes 3,100-mile autonomous flight across the United States
Joby Aviation says a converted Cessna Caravan aircraft has flown more than 3,100 miles across the United States using the company’s autonomy technology, without a human pilot taking control at any point. Joby described the journey as the first-ever autonomous flight across the country.
The aircraft completed autonomous taxiing, take-offs, navigation and landings. It was remotely supervised from Joby’s California headquarters and Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina, while a pilot was on board to meet compliance requirements. Joby said the aircraft conducted the entire operation autonomously.
A demonstration beyond the air-taxi programme
Joby is best known for developing an all-electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft for short urban passenger trips and pursuing Federal Aviation Administration type certification for that eVTOL design. The cross-country Caravan operation instead highlights a parallel autonomy business that can be applied to conventional aircraft.
The company says its autonomy stack is designed to be retrofitted to a wide range of existing aircraft. Its initial market plan is to equip a regional airframe, with potential uses in defence missions and commercial freight transport. Joby cited medical transport, disaster response and defence logistics as examples of missions that could operate across varied environments.
Defence work supports the autonomy strategy
The flight also fits Joby’s expanding defence activity and its longstanding relationship with the US Department of Defense. A $17 million Air Force contract through AFWERX has supported the effort to bring a regional aircraft with the autonomy stack to market.
Joby has also built its dedicated defence business through Joby’s $500 million Resonant Sciences acquisition, which adds radio-frequency and sensor systems to projects involving turbine-electric and hydrogen-electric aircraft as well as autonomy technology. The acquired Ohio-based company now operates within Joby’s defence business.
Separately, Joby signed an agreement with L3Harris Technologies last year to explore a new class of aircraft for defence applications: a gas-turbine hybrid vertical take-off and landing aircraft capable of autonomous flight.
What happens next
Joby said the aircraft will continue back towards the West Coast over the following two weeks, with planned stops including Louisville, Kentucky, and Salt Lake City. The completed eastbound segment supplies an operational demonstration of the stack over a long route rather than a single airfield or test range.
For businesses assessing aviation autonomy, the immediate implication is not passenger air-taxi deployment. Joby’s programme indicates that retrofit systems for freight, emergency and defence operations may form a distinct commercial path, provided operators can meet the applicable compliance and mission requirements.
