Netflix plans 1,000 job cuts across product and technology teams

Netflix plans 1,000 job cuts across product and technology teams

Netflix confirms workforce reduction

Netflix is laying off about 1,000 employees, equivalent to roughly 6% of its workforce, the company confirmed to TechCrunch. Most of the reductions will affect product, technology, legal and human resources functions.

The streaming company had 16,000 full-time employees at the end of last year, based on its annual regulatory filing. The Wall Street Journal first reported the decision, citing an internal memo to staff from co-chief executives Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters.

In that memo, the executives said Netflix’s mission to entertain audiences worldwide requires discipline in deciding where to prioritise people and resources. Netflix said it would continue to invest aggressively in high-impact areas intended to improve its service and that it remains on track to meet its full-year forecast.

Competition extends beyond streaming

The cuts come after Netflix lost a prolonged bidding contest for Warner Bros Discovery’s streaming and studio businesses to Paramount Skydance. Netflix had seen potential in assets including studios, HBO, streaming platforms, games and television networks such as CNN and HGTV.

Netflix also faces a broader battle for viewers’ time. Alongside established streaming competitors, it is seeking to retain users’ attention against YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and other social applications. Market-research reports have indicated that TikTok is closing the gap with Netflix on engagement, while YouTube reportedly exceeded Netflix in average daily viewing during 2025.

Revenue initiatives remain central

Netflix has been pursuing several ways to derive more value from its subscriber base. Those efforts include price increases, expansion of its advertising-supported tier, and investment in live events, sports, gaming and children’s programming. It has also explored AI-supported features, video podcasts, short-form video and a redesigned mobile app.

For 2025, Netflix reported revenue of $45.2 billion and said advertising revenue had risen above $1.5 billion. The figures frame a strategy that combines cost discipline with continued spending on products and formats designed to increase engagement.

Business implication

For businesses competing for digital attention, Netflix’s move illustrates the need to align staffing and operating costs with a clearly defined set of high-impact priorities, while maintaining investment in the services and experiences that support the company plan.
