Samsung Warns Memory Supply Will Tighten in 2027 and Stay Constrained Through 2028

Samsung Warns Memory Supply Will Tighten in 2027 and Stay Constrained Through 2028

Samsung said during its Q2 earnings call that the memory chip shortage will probably intensify in 2027, with supply remaining constrained until at least 2028. The company manufactures roughly one-third of the world's memory chips and is receiving long-range demand forecasts directly from frontier AI labs.

AI infrastructure is reshaping the supply chain

AI developers need large volumes of memory for data centers and are seeking guaranteed future capacity. Samsung can therefore prioritize customers prepared to sign long-term contracts, giving the manufacturer enough visibility to install equipment and expand output with less risk of demand suddenly disappearing.

This shift may reduce the memory industry's familiar boom-and-bust cycle, but it leaves less capacity for consumer electronics. The same mechanism is visible in the impact of AI-driven memory inflation on India's smartphone market, where rising memory costs are weakening demand for lower-priced smartphones.

Record chip sales, rising device costs

Samsung's semiconductor unit posted record sales in Q2 as memory prices increased. The benefit did not extend across the group: profitability declined in its smartphone and television operations because more expensive components raised production costs.

Frontier AI labs have been “sharing their medium- to long-term demand forecasts” directly with Samsung to secure supply.

Samsung has passed part of the increase to buyers through higher Galaxy smartphone and tablet prices, after which device demand declined. Apple also raised prices for MacBooks, Macs and iPads. It now expects quarterly revenue growth of 9% to 11% year over year, down from its recent 16% rate.

Further pressure may come from graphics hardware: Nvidia consumer GPU prices are expected to rise by 20% to 30%. That could make gaming systems, desktops, consoles and laptops more expensive as manufacturers compete with AI data centers for components.

For businesses, the practical response is to revise hardware budgets and procurement schedules now. Multi-year purchasing plans, earlier orders and flexible device specifications can reduce exposure to price increases and supply delays through 2028.
