Waymo begins public robotaxi invitations in Las Vegas
Waymo has started inviting members of the public to use its robotaxi service in Las Vegas, weeks after receiving final approval from Nevada transportation regulators. The Alphabet-owned company is deploying “dozens” of its Ojai minivan robotaxis in an initial service area covering the Strip south of Highway 589 and extending into Boulder Junction.
Las Vegas is Waymo’s 15th market. Public access is being introduced on a rolling basis: prospective passengers must request an invitation and receive an access code. Waymo has used this staged approach in its other launches and generally makes a service available to all riders within one or two months of the official launch.
Nevada approval sets a high deployment ceiling
The Nevada Transportation Authority has authorised Waymo to operate commercial robotaxi services in Clark County, which includes Las Vegas. Its permit allows up to 1,000 autonomous vehicles during the next year.
Tesla and Uber have also received approval from the agency. Tesla may deploy up to 5,000 vehicles, while Uber may operate up to 1,000 robotaxis through partnerships with Hyundai subsidiary Motional and Zoox. In aggregate, the permits permit as many as 8,000 robotaxis across Clark County over the coming 12 months, although the companies are not expected to reach those limits immediately.
Waymo expands as competitors prepare launches
The Las Vegas launch follows Waymo’s recent expansion to invited riders in Denver, San Diego and Tampa. That staged expansion is reflected in Waymo robotaxi launches in three US cities, which documents the company’s move into those three markets before broader access is considered.
Waymo already operates in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, Phoenix and the San Francisco Bay Area. It also launched and later paused service in San Antonio. The company says its fleet totals more than 4,000 robotaxis distributed across more than a dozen cities.
Las Vegas is also a planned commercial robotaxi market for Tesla, Zoox and Motional. Tesla Cybercab chief engineer Eric Early told Nevada regulators in August that the company would not be “extremely happy and satisfied” unless it could reach about 2,500 vehicles, or somewhat more, in the next year.
What the rollout means for local operators
The first phase remains limited by invitation, fleet size and service boundaries, but the permits establish scope for a much larger autonomous-ride presence in Clark County. Businesses that depend on passenger arrivals should monitor Waymo’s operating-area expansion and prepare pickup, drop-off and customer-support processes for growing robotaxi use.
